Kusha
Held on the eve of South African Day of Reconciliation, Castle of our Skins presents the US premiere of “Kusha”: an audience-participatory, highly immersive and largely improvised musical work by South African composer Monthati Masebe.
Grounded in African sound healing technologies and a desire to preserve South African indigenous soundscapes, “Kusha” will be performed using instruments built during earlier composer-led workshops.
Harvard Community Soundscape
Come together to pause, breathe and be in the company of live, improvisational artmaking by Díjí Kay and student artists in various genres.
Shine On
October 26: Shaolin Liu Performance Hall @2pm
October 27: Conservatory Lab Charter School @3pm
Castle of our Skins presents a family friendly, music-dance-spoken word performance that shines the light on Black artistry as part of the Conservatory Lab Charter School's inaugural concert series.
Solo and chamber works by legendary Black composers including Samuel Coleridge Taylor and Undine Smith Moore complement the sounds of contemporary voices like Jessie Montgomery and Kendrick Lamar, all while mingling with spoken word, contemporary and balletic dance performances.
Julia Perry Centennial
The Gardner is delighted to partner with Castle of our Skins to celebrate the centenary of American composer Julia Perry. An American modernist maverick, Perry studied with Luigi Dallapiccola at Tanglewood and in Italy, and with the legendary Nadia Boulanger at Fontainebleau, where Perry was awarded the grand prix. She was uncompromising and fearless in her music, and overcame myriad of challenges to pursue her art. Works by her contemporary Irene Britton Smith and her teacher Nadia Boulanger complete the program.
